Want better discussions on these forums? Disable "reactions."

To whosoever may be running these forums as well as to the participants therein: if you want more intelligent and meaningful conversations here, about CoH and not about CoH, disable these "reactions" below posts. What the heck does a like or dislike mean? Or a piece of pizza? Is that pizza for me or am I required to treat others to a slice thereby? Even a laughing face: is that mockery, sympathy, appreciation... what, words getting too long? Let's not encourage moronism. Disable "reactions" and let people actually state what they want to say, if anything. And if they don't feel strongly enough about a post to click and write below at least "I agree" or "Bad idea, because...", let them write nothing at all. Raise the bar here a little, all right? Make people do a little jump, as a proof of stake. Because people have gotten too fat, on their brains.

I hear what you're saying, but if you ever frequented the CoH forums back on Live, remember how many one-word posts there were there, as well.  Just /jranger, which had become forum shorthand for "This is a terrible idea, under no circumstances do we ever want to see anything like this, and the poster's intellect is highly suspect for that matter."

 

Take away the reaction icons, I guaran-dam-tee you will start seeing a flood of /jranger replies, and probably a few others will be cooked up and instituted.  

Personally, I'd far rather keep the reaction icons, which at least eliminate that kind of chaff from the actual message streams.  You can always just flat out ignore the icons if you wish. There are no settings to ignore one-word text replies, or forum replies that are just images/meme's, etc.

 

Be careful what you wish for.

IMO giving someone a “thumbs down” is much nicer and gentler than saying “your idea is f’n stupid!”

Which is what we’d probably be left with.

From my own experience, I find that people prefer I not post at all, and for the most part, I try to accommodate them. People are interested in THEIR OWN opinions.

I'm glad you stated this, because until you did, I had no idea what that meant. So, a retroactive raspberry to whomever replied to any of my suggestions in that fashion.

The people that respond with thumbs down to my posts do so predictably and regularly. 

So If I post something and they don't respond, I know it's time to send a wellness check to their house.

I actually do empathize with the OPs general sentiment here, even if I have to admit that the responses are pretty funny. 😄

Reactions are for people who have an opinion, but nothing to add to the discussion. Encouraging them to post is not smart.

 

If passive aggressive reactions are bothering you, just remember that these are people with nothing to add.

 

This is the equivalent of telling people not to nod, smile or laugh during a live discussion.

 

"Sit there motionless until you are prepared to argue with or compliment me!"

 

If you have a problem with reactions, that's definitely a you thing and not at all indicative of the quality of the conversations here. It is pretty terrible, by the way... but it's not because of reactions.

Well, the OP's not wrong. When someone reacts with a pizza...I really don't have a clue what that means. Fortunately, I don't really care. The only ones that kind of bug me are the confused ones, because I feel like I'm way too wordy to be confusing. I go to great lengths to over-explain my thinking, because there's a lot missed in the written word. Intonation, pitch, etc.

I feel you on both of those, my friend.  Whenever I read a well constructed forum post and see the confusion reaction, I always think to myself that the person who reacted that way must simply be too dim to understand the topic, or else they're just a very poor reader. 🤷‍♂️

I like this suggestion more than "Please only allow comments that agree with the OP, delete all others." I don't agree with either, but I have my preferences.

Reactions have nothing to do with the quality of discussions here. People are either inclined to post long, thoughtful comments or they aren't. If they are, they aren't going to replace those posts with reactions. If they aren't, they aren't suddenly going to start if you take reactions away.

I've always read the pizza reaction (on most threads, as "have a slice!" / general idea of support.  Whether that's the intent, could not say, and I'm sure on certain specific threads, it's used for other purposes. One must learn to read between the icons, sometimes.
