Like the title suggests i'm looking for a new toon to solo. I'm thinking of a Scrapper or Mastermind.  I might even be tempted to do a Defender.  I'm curious to what you think would be fun solo ??

Here are a few characters I've really enjoyed playing:

Dual Pistols/Ninjitsu Sentinel - Think The Shadow or other such pulp characters.

War Mace/Ninjitsu/Soul Scrapper - Hits hard from the shadows and can still hold their own.  I treat Shadow Meld like a defensive buildup power and moonbeam for those pesky runners or for strategic pulls.

Elec Armor/Staff Tanker - A true survivor stacking great resists and defenses, with added flair!

Gravity/Kinetics Controller - Take everything from your enemies and make their power your own!

Fun?  ANY concept you enjoy.

Scrappers and MMs are very different experiences.  The playstyles are like completely different games.

I encourage you to find a concept you really like.  Build out a costume and AT/Powers for it.  You may re roll once you decide a better AT/Powers might be...  It took me forever to settle into a Dark^3 Corr.

When you find a great concept, you enjoy everything you do.  The hook might be a name, a costume piece, a story...   Dive in and enjoy!

Sorry, this is soooooo subjective.

If I'm being completely open and vulnerable, the only characters I really love to solo are my fiery armor brutes and tanks. The rest of them can function solo, but a team lets them have a bit more flexibility in what they can and can't risk.

So, I'd go fire/* tank. Or */fire brute.

Now, if you want to break out and team up even a little bit, plant/dark controller. Ice/fire blaster, water/ice blaster, fire/ice blast, water/fire blast. Fire/natty corruptor is a lot of fun on teams.

Scrapper-like, but go with a Shield/Electric Melee Stalker, and pick up Spring Attack.  The BAMPFing lifestyle is so much fun.

@smnolimits41, what @biostem and @Snarky and @Ukase and @Clave Dark 5 said.

I suggest picking an AT and then asking for a good Powerset combo for it.  I did find it odd you suggested a Scrapper or a Mastermind.  I don't think there's any two ATs that are more different.

Almost anything.

Honestly, I rarely start with "I want/need this AT/Powerset," other than when I was doing something like "one of every X to 50" on live. Most of the time I'm starting with a name or concept and running from there to make a *character* I find interesting.

If you're thinking of mostly solo play, I'd dissuade you against a defender--go corruptor instead. Pretty much the same thing, except one favours the attack and the other favours support. Most of the defender's powers will not be useable unless you're on a team or have a pet.

Scrappers and MMs are very survivable solo. powers depend on what floats your goat.

As for concept, I usually start off with with either a name or a costume, unless I have a solid concept in mind already. Concept and Costume is king. That said, I try to find an AT and powers that fit the concept. It's a hit and miss, and most of the time I end up giving up on a toon around level 20-30 only to fine tune it. Most recent example is my plant/nature controller only to be shelved at 36 (costume and name were too cool to delete) and remade into a plant/poison troller.

One thing that factors in is the way a power animates. There are some powers that I never play because I don't like the animation, no matter how meta the power may be. Also, I try to stick to concept... such as not having flight powers, no matter how convenient and meta (evasive action offers a huge chunk of def to all) when the toon doesn't call for it.

As for fun, I personally enjoy the grind of lower (powerless) levels much more than the endgame incarnate stuff. I also found that after playing the Hardcore Permadeath challenge that the treat of death is what makes things fun for me. So once a permadeath toon reaches 50, I've been known to roll the same toon just to level up from 1 - 50 again.

I just finished a Regen/Claws tanker ...pretty sturdy and fun

I am currently working on a StJ/SR Brute.

I have slept a bit on StJ and am now getting to playing it. Have to admit to liking it.

And even within one choice of powersets, you can get radically different playstyles -- my Grav/Traps Controller plays completely different on teams than she does solo, because when solo she can take the time to lay down a minefield before Wormholing a spawn into it, with her Singularity grabbing any survivors, but on teams the "gotta go fast" fixation virtually eliminates any ability to take the time to set up 'thin the herd' minefields before the Scrappers and Brutes are wedged into the middle of a spawn.

I have a Dual Pistols/Ninjitsu Blaster.  Still getting the hang of Blapping...

The Gravity/Kinetics Controller sounds amazing!  I have a Grav/Time 'Troller but it never occurred to me to try Kin!?

@Super Whatsit

Superbase passcode (Excelsior) is "passcode-6475"

It's all a Nemesis plot.  But not everything is a Nemesis plot!

Ninjitsu on Sentinels and Scrappers is a lot different than how it is for Blasters;  Think of it as a defense armor set, with some small amounts of damage resistance plus a self heal and self endurance restoration power;  It has no attacks in it.

I'd say whatever concept you find fun.  If I find a good name and costume, I've got a fun toon that I like playing.  Powers and AT matter less.

For a bit of out of box thinking, I also find Widows and Soldiers fun to play, and I tend to play them red side (but also often as a rogue so I can cross over when needed).  Scrappers are fun.  I also find Tankers a lot of fun, Invul being my go-to when I have a concept that obviously doesn't fit a power.

I love masterminds, but they can be hard to play on Incarnate content.  I often lose all the pets and just use the secondary, so try to pick something strong if you plan on playing an MM in all content. For solo regular play they're a blast, and much better now with some of the recent buffs from HC.

Tanker - Shield/War Mace is strong and pretty

Widow - You can make a cheap Night Widow build and make a Fortunata later when you have the cash

Soldier - Spiders are my favorite of the choices here

(Edit to add: remember you have three builds.  Though it's expensive (lots of Inf for purplz), you can have a Blood Widow/Night Widow/Fortunata all in one character, if you desire.  Same with the Soldier, you can have a Huntsman/Spider/Bane all in one.  It's a fun little extra that makes the whole forced respec shenanigans worth it.)

Mastermind -- Robotics/Time is my go-to MM right now, tho Demons/Rad seems fun so far, as well as Necro/Poison, the recent buffs helped the latter a lot.

alright, after playing around with costumes and names, and powers.  I have gone with Marine Affinity/Water Blast.  My characters name on Excelsior is White Mako.
