The story may be public domain, but out of curiosity, if the character resembles, say, Disney's iconic look for the apple-tainted individual, does that create a violation?

 

Expanding on that further, if a work of any kind is derived from a public domain item, but the formal title for the new work is "SoAndSo's [insert fairy tale classic here]" does this make the new work a protected product at least in regards to the look, and possibly modifications to the character, story, or name?

There are tons of other versions of those iconic fair tales - just go with a different character design.

Probably.  Disney has to protect the copyright on their Snow White.

For any of those familiar with the I-series of modules from D&D (Tracy Hickman of DragonLance fame did a bunch in that series including the one's this relates to and the Ravenloft ones) The Lost Tomb of Martek module(I5 I believe and last of the Desert of Desolation series) made a perfect passing and humous reference that fits better for Snow White and the Seven Dwarves:    Snow Dwarf and the Seven Wites.   Perfect for a Necro/Cold mm 😛

 

Only other book from it I remember was Gone With the Air Elemental but there were more. 😛

The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter was also a good placer to start looking at making sort of sideways fairy tales.

So are many of Disney's properties, but they aggressively and ceaselessly issue C&Ds and lawsuits over anything that so much as resembles a blurry reflection in a puddle of anything they can claim as their proprietary version.

 

Been there. Worked long on a project that involved a version of Zorro taken from the original, long-PD novels. There was no way (as a non multinational megacorp) to represent the character without crossing onto Disney's turf.

That would be where it crosses the line.  The character of Thor dates back many centuries in Norse lore.  In Norse lore, he had red hair.  If you make a blond Thor with a costume that looks like one of the Marvel ones, that's infringing.
