homecoming gets old

I've been playing on the homecoming servers for years now, and frankly, considering the progress made on the other servers, Thun*** and reb*** among others, I wonder why I stay.
So, it's true that the “trade” part still works, but what about the rest?
I've created an MM on thund*** and, by God, I'll never play an MM on Homecoming again.
Why not get players involved in the server's evolution, because right now, frankly, it's not moving.
It gets boring after a while!

Is this a two way conversation or are you here to just dunk on the community?

 

Since Homecoming started they've asked players to contribute in many ways, including becoming a developer to support content expansions and by testing out changes both on the open and closed beta shards. Homecoming has added more content in the last six years than I can even believe, on par with legacy content.

Looking over the patch notes for tspy, looks like they have some cool stuff that some people would like better.  A few things I noted would be cool if HC implemented and some might get a HC version.  Based on notes, I think there's more development from HC, but Thunderspy has some more flashy stuff.

 

For myself, I wouldn't be able to play two similar servers, so I'm not going to check it out further, but I think others may find it interesting.

They do, every update.  But there are a lot of players who show no interest in assisting in the guidance of that evolution.  For example, people who post 2 or 3 times every few years and say nothing beyond "This game is boring and I like the other servers better".  And because there's also little interest in joining the development team, which is small and working wholly on personal time, and a certain standard of quality is expected (as opposed to other server groups' "Throw everything at the wall, see what doesn't start fires" approach), development is slower.

 

If you don't like what's being done, the time to speak up is when an update is in open beta (or, better, closed beta, which has a standing invitation), not once every six years.  If you don't like the pace of development, the solution is to apply to join the team, not ask that they work harder and faster.  If you don't care enough to participate in some way, you take what you get, and you get what you put into it.

"You lot" is a phrase that is plural, similar to "you all." In other words I was referring to the people on the forums, not to just you specifically.

Look, Homecoming's major draw is its population. Also, Homecoming relies on donations to keep going. So, encouraging people to leave with a condescending post, like you did, does not benefit Homecoming, you, or the person you're responding to. So I'm asking why you would do that. Is that too difficult a question to answer?

I think it sounds like he’d be happier on Thunderspy, which he presumably doesn’t find as boring based on his post.

 

And I think some people are pretty tired of this exact same thread popping up every month, too.
 

And I’m not super concerned about the Homecoming population taking a nosedive because of the post in question.

Oh boy, where to begin?

Players can become Developers, but the process is full of training and getting them acquainted with the processes of Homecoming. Making sure they know the ropes. Making sure they understand and agree to certain things. They then can start working on things, or so I imagine, and then THAT stuff has to wait to be merged in with other things for Closed Beta first.

Now, Homecoming will never generally use anything from Rebirth or Thunderspy. Why? Because we're not those servers. Thunderspy also went in and did things that are quantity over quality - HC prefers quality over quantity even if you might disagree with the quality of the changes they do. They have a certain methodology to it that does not fit with a number of changes TSpy did. Rebirth is doing their own things too and HC is not Rebirth.

Don't get me wrong: Rebirth has a lot of cool stuff. Thunderspy does too if you look past what I'm about to mention.

See there's a big big problem: Thunderspy in particular contributes to this day to a lot of Anti-HC conspiracy theories regarding donations (claims of Cipher pocketing the money for example), spouted baseless claims that HC sent cronies after them (I.e that HC Heads or players have called phone numbers tied to TSpy leadership), and more. They have also had leadership and members of that server try to poach (I use this word loosely) from HC. While also calling people who play on HC sheep. I speak from experience there in dealing with Arde, Inncuous, and Dr. Brain. These people have continuously engaged in insulting HC and its players out of some long held grudge and jealousy that people do not want to be on their cesspit of a server.


Case in point. That is them calling people who donate Paypigs.

Now, one question that gets asked a lot is why not collaborate?

I refer to the above - that TSpy would likely have no interest and that Rebirth may (I am assuming here, I'm no sneak peak mind reader) have no interest in it either. All of the servers are doing their own thing and that is where it should be left at. This is a tried and true topic that will keep happening, but answers may very well remain the same for eternity.

Also each server has their own thought process to what power changes / additions seem good and what does not. The philosophy of this is likely going to make collaborations difficult as well. Each team has their own vision for what City of Heroes should be.

One of the great things about the CoH community being set up the way it is is that there are so many rogue servers (and now this officially licensed one!) that all have differing interpretations of the base game. There's stuff other servers do that I wish HC does (or know why it doesn't, because I've seen the implementation be a bit janky even if the idea is really fun.) In the same vein, there's stuff HC does that I wish other servers could adopt (showing weapons on backs takes SO much more effort than you would expect). This largely isn't going to happen for a dozen different reasons (different code bases seems like the main one, from what i've read, alongside all the servers having differing priorities in what they choose to work on because this is an esoteric old MMO with fan-made tools being developed by volunteers and there's always going to be a manpower limitation that results from that.)

It's a broad ecosystem, and there's a server for literally everyone's tastes. If you're struggling with waiting for new content or feeling like HC is too "safe", there's definitely a server out there more your speed (and, to be frank, nobody is going to yell at you for coming and going from multiple servers based on which one is most interesting to you. I've given most of the major servers a try in the past few years before settling on HC as my "main" home a few months before the licensing announcement.)

Just don't be surprised if people act rudely towards you if you try to fan the flames between the different servers. People like the servers they like for a reason.

And my issue isn't with Arcane, obviously. It's with what was said, and I've seen many others post something similar, in case my post didn't make that clear. My issue is that I want Homecoming to stay around for a long time.

 

Look, Homecoming doesn't have that many players, on Friday evenings it's usually up to what? 5k or so? Just because Concord wished they had that many players doesn't mean that's a big number. When that number gets near zero Homecoming will likely cease to be. That will happen eventually, and I want to delay that day for as long as possible.

 

Every person that gets chased away because someone on the forum, in or game, tells them to go play on another server, reduces Homecoming's lifespan by an unknown amount. And I've seen that these things tend to snowball. People start leaving and then more people leave because people are leaving. Chasing people away is bad for Homecoming. How bad? I don't know because I cannot foresee the future. But I'll ask all of you. If you want Homecoming to stay up for a long time then isn't it in your best interest to not chase players away?
