Hello. I've returned after quite a while and started playing again. But almost immediately ran into an old problem that still hasn't been fixed.

See, I made a new toon. I have no idea how any of my old toons worked by now, so that's the natural thing to do. I played a bit, got to 20s, then it was time to make a proper build. I set up mids (and that was a pain in the ass and a half for whatever reason, it also still doesn't work properly), looked at some forum builds, looked at all the ios and whatnot, then thought to myself: "You know, instead of dealing with this mess, I can play this other cool toon that just occurred to me!" Then, obviously, I went and made the new cool toon that had just occurred to me. Next thing you know, I'm like 6 toons deep, with even more coming along, none of whom has managed to reach 30.

This is a messed up game, y'all. The same thing happens whenever I start playing this game. I thought it might've been a me problem, but no. Clearly, it's the children who're wrong.

In a completely unrelated matter, how do y'all pick a toon and stick with it?

Ha! I let you know when I find out...

I've got a problem too. Might be similar to yours.  Every time I make a new toon I'm positive that this one will be The One! The legendary Main that is so awesome and fun to play that I stick with it into hundreds of vet levels. I had this same pattern back on live.

Chasing the Main seems to be in direct opposition to this other thing this game makes me do. I don't know what it is exactly, but it sratches a creative itch for me, or something. I love to make new characters, usually with some synergy between powers. I try to make them "the best at what they do" (I think I read too much Wolverine in high school...) and come up with ridiculous origin stories. Sometimes it's almost a palpable obsession that makes me want to build it and see how much baddie ass they (I) can kick. I think about it on the drive into work while shaking the steering wheel, "It's going to be awesome!"

But then that obsession fades away. Fortunately, or not, for the last couple of years it always seems to come back, with a new "best" that will become everything I need it to be.

Yeah, I'm crazy too. I think there are others like us here. With similar, but also unique symptoms.

Something that is different now from back on live is that the altitis cycle for me is now long enough to hit 50. With double xp and fast moving teams I can usually get a couple dozen vet levels before I move on. On live I only got one toon to 50. Lots of alts though!

I'm not too worried though. This new guy I made is different. I just got him to 50 a couple days ago. He's a bad mofo. It feels good. He's definitely The One.

Here's an alternate theory:

It's not the game that's messed up, it's the players! 🤣

The beauty of this game is that you can create a concept toon and suddenly... it's amazing but there are so many ideas to play and try and see and feel and do and operate and play and and and and...

you have 1000 slots per shard and there's no limit to the number of accounts you can have. Go to town, play as many ideas as you can to your heart's content and then when you've done that, come back for more!

Then rinse and repeat.

And when you've done all of that and think you've had enough, there's one more thing you can do: Go hunt! Kill Skuls

I learned early on that chemistry is just like cooking. From there I worked out that a mixture of Barium, Carbon Monoxide and Nitrogen between two slices of bread gives you a delicious BaCON sandwich

On one hand, the altitis is real.

On the other, there'll be those ideas that'll just stick with you and you want to see them to 50 and beyond.  Its hard to explain, but its usually the ones that you're at 30 and are still having fun with. I have a few alts over vet level 40, Actionette is vet level 98. I've seen plenty of other players with vet levels in triple digits and even those with four.

Just wait until you have started creating alts with the same power sets.  I must have 3 or 4 AR/Devices blasters...

Welcome back.

as @Lockpick said when you get a character to level 30 and realize you already have one just a couple levels ahead... grrr

Dude, just wait until you strip a lvl 50 of their IOs and delete them only to find yourself creating a new character with the same powerset choices two weeks later.

I set myself a rule that I can't make a new character until the last one has hit 50. Because of this I have gotten very good at getting a character to level 50 in about three days.

Alt-itis cannot be treated.  You accept that you are an alt-aholic and embrace it!  Seriously, though, it's a combination of costume, concept, and just the right combination of powersets that eventually "click", and which keep you coming back to that character time and again.  Welcome back!

Okay, but you have 1000 slots, why are you deleting anyone.

Cuz I'm not so bloated on inf that I can't just keep restocking new alts every other week with 5 sets of purples?

I mean, me too, but I still keep the alt on the shelf. Never know when you want to go back!

The toon picks me.  Sometimes it's even just the costume.  I once repeated a power set choice on a Troller; the first one I drop around 45 or so, the second I zoomed up to 50 before realizing what I'd done.  Maybe the second build was better too, I don't know.  Sometimes I make a fun toon and then just can't be bothered, so the toon does pick me.

Play however you like - they're your characters after all, but couldn't you just abandon them, without deleting them, in the off chance you ever want to revisit said character(s)?

I have no idea what it's like to suffer from Alt-itis, but I've always imagined it's like a never-ending cycle of having a "cool idea" and then satisfying the urge to create it.

I am a finisher. I get my characters as close to "done" as possible before I move on. My road to 50 is very old school and very boring: SOs to 25 or 30, standardized IO slotting after that, TFs, missions and I collect sets as I go. I have used MIDS to make one specific build because I was having a hard time getting soft-capped on vibes.

I think the reason that I can finish characters is because I start and end with theme. When I begin a character, I begin them as a true newbie. Their costume is simple... they are weak and kind of lame. If I can't make a thematic justification for a power, I don't take it. If I don't deserve a cape or an aura, I don't wear one. I usually only use two costumes until around level 20... and one is street clothes.

But I don't make puffs. I make strong characters, so as I approach Epic Pools and eventually Incarnates, my character as well as my character is growing in power. I have to make thematic justifications for these changes. As I make those justifications, the costumes get cooler and more elaborate.

I don't do social roleplay, but I play lore accurate. When I go over to the redside Strike Forces, I wear an evil costume and my dude is really over there doing CRIME... not collecting badges. I may even change his name and use an alter-ego. When he comes back, he remembers his time over there. I have a natural origin character that spent 40 levels hating superheroes and now only uses his Darkness Mastery powers when nobody is around or he is forced to due to the threat level.

So I guess what I'm saying is I make my characters play hard to get with mean it makes me want them more.
