Remember we are talking about pure solo play, so although corruptors get scourge mechanic, the defenders get vigilance which is better for most content solo. Now even with that said most of the time corruptors will do more damage, but it gets messy and confusing when we consider individual sets, epic power pools, and possible proc builds. A kinetics corruptor for example will always do more dmg than a kin defender, but this may not be the case for something like a storm/water defender compared to a water/storm corruptor. The storm water defender can more easily have softcapped def and make a proc build that will out dmg the corruptor version, plus the defender soul drain and amplify (whatever waters version is called) will be more effective giving the edge to the defender. In general, the more reliably you can enhance your dmg, the more the corruptor will come out ahead because the extra base dmg and higher dmg buff cap really starts to shine the higher you go with dmg buffs. I think that sonic blast will do more dmg on a defender most of the time solo (the possible exception being a sonic/kin corruptor). It would be helpful to know what powersets the OP is thinking about in order to better answer this question.

Ok, after messing with this a bit more I think I managed to improve it quite a bit. S/L/E res is all capped, hasten is 5 seconds away from perma, I don't think you'll have any end issues, melee def is .4% away from softcap and softcapped if you use +5s (I'd just use the attuned), ranged def is one purple insp away from softcap, and most importantly you retain super speed. You should be able to stealth missions with super speed and sprint. Toxic res is so close to cap it doesn't matter and every ground zero you use will boost your other resistances up just a little more for 10 seconds. Particle shielding is perma and you'll have about 43-44 HP regen as long as you keep it up. You should be able to do all content with this comfortably (but slowly if you are solo). Have you considered a Corruptor? I have a Dual/Dark Corruptor build with softcapped M/R def and 71% s/l res with soul drain and perma hasten. I think it would do more DMG than a defender and still have the necessary defenses. Of course, it is much easier to do this on a defender. Also, a proc build on a defender could conceivably do more dmg even when buffed. What's wrong with using Ball Lightning? It may be a targeted AOE, but its damage is still very good. It's similar to Fire Blast's Fireball, you still use it in your attack chain because its DPS is higher than flares, but in order to use it without flares you need an obscene amount of recharge. You end up using fireball and flares in most fire blast ST attack chains, unless you have all that recharge to make flares unneeded. A proc'd out tesla cage is also a very good option as the dmg would be fantastic, but then you would want to make sure to use musculature alpha and not spiritual or agility. Getting all the slots needed for a top build might be difficult though.

I personally just didn't find it worth while and I was trying to get as close to range and melee softcap as possible. Poison trap can be good, especially if its proc'd out, but I just didn't like it in practice. This is also kind of how I feel about poison in general, it just doesn't feel or play all that well in practice and it is further hurt by not having a self heal, which is why I made sure to add a healing enhancement to dehydrate. For what poison is trying to accomplish (-res and -tohit debuffs), there are just better sets at doing it while retaining other benefits. Rad and Dark spring to mind. I really wanted to like poison, but I find myself going back to my dark miasma or cold domination corruptors instead time and time again (this is when there is another kin in the team, if there isn't a kin, I'm always rolling on my fire/kin Corr). It's a shame really.

Poison/Water is a defender pairing. This is the corruptor forums. 🙂 Now, a Water/Poison build I can help with. So, the idea here is to stay in melee range as much as possible and use soul drain to boost your dmg. With envemon+soul drain+venomous gas I'm hoping you can crank out the dmg. Use dehydrate to heal. I have two 50 poison corruptors and I just don't like them in comparison to many other secondary sets, go ahead and give this a try, but range will be a problem. You could check my fire/kin corr builds for some inspiration on things you could do. Also consider a proc build as water has a bit more options for it than fire. If you do a proc build I suggest you go s/l/e build with mace shield.

When it comes to soul drain or fulcrum shift or other multi hit dmg buffs you cannot trust mids damage numbers. In the end fire/time corr will be better overall with considerable investment. The buffs on a defender will be higher, but often the buffs from power boost/radial clarion+farsight are so significant you don't need anymore as a corr for almost all teams. The damage between a corruptor and defender when buffed with soul drain and any other dmg buffs is very significant and it is due to the higher base damage instead of scourge.

So this is true for most corruptor sets, but with sonic it is far more debatable. Let's assume you can hold 4 debuffs on a target (shriek, scream, shout, howl), on a corruptor thats -60% res and on a defender its -80% res. let's say on a corruptor shout will do around 75 dmg and on a defender this will do 65 dmg. Now we add the debuffs, on a corruptor shout will do 120 dmg at -60% res (75x1.6) and a defender will do 117 (65x1.8). Not very different. Now if you add in the fact that you are on a team, the defender will win for sure in overall team DPS, but the defender will win solo too due to vigilance giving a 30% more dmg buff at all times versus the corruptors scourge which we can generally say is around 18-27% dmg depending on what you are fighting. The only time a corruptor will win with sonic blast agasint a defender is against an AV or GM because they are the only things with large enough health pools to make scourge beat vigilance solo. Added to this is the fact that the defender will also get better modifiers on powers, making softcapping ranged and melee defense easily obtainable and you will also get more dmg buffs out of amplify and soul drain. The build that I've made with a Sonic/Dark/Dark defender has soul drain almost up permanently, so this does matter. The only other thing to consider is the damage buff cap (400% for defenders and 500% for corruptors). At the damage cap a corruptor will of course do more dmg, but its harder to get there on a corruptor and on a team where this is easily achieved with a kin friend the extra -20% res debuff will be more valuable by far. For these reasons, I consider Sonic Blast to be a defender set. Here is a defender Dark/Sonic/Dark build I worked out quickly that has melee/ranged def softcapped, hardcapped s/l res, perma hasten, and close to perma soul drain. I did not take scream as well because I wouldn't plan to solo with a sonic blast defender and therefore keeping an AV at -60% res is enough for me considering I'd need to heal and do other things. So in terms of power and self sufficiency I would not go Sonic/Storm. Thematically what about a Sonic/Dark? I believe you could make a build that was r/m softcapped and you'd have tar pit which is always great. Edit: lol, Seimoraig beat me to it by seconds. Edit 2: Oh! One more thing, do you have your heart set on corruptor? I think a defender might work better with a Dark/Sonic powerset due to the higher debuff values in sonic.

I'd use something like this. It has m/r def softcapped, max s/l res, 54% energy res, perma hasten with 2 speed siphons or 2 repel procs in 2 minutes, some -res procs, all kinds of stuff. It is worth noting that if you wanted to go the s/l/e route instead you could probably get more personal dmg with a proc build, but I like the all around defense to everything more. The only absolutely necessary power is dispersion bubble, everything else is just nice to have. This is largely true, but for corruptors it is generally accepted that you typically want either dark mastery for soul drain or mace mastery for scorpion Shield's s/l/e defense. For a fire farming build you may want fire mastery, but only if you have other ways of buffing your damage (like /kin). But those are just in general, everything changes based on what powersets you have and what you want out of a build.

So I actually have tested an ice/kin vs fire/kin for farming times in AEs at +4x8. The fire/kin is actually faster due to the higher damage and all the dots (not to mention how good fireball is for AoE). It is more chaotic though as mobs run around a lot more. Both work well, but fire is the clear winner. As for kinetics, it also isn't the absolute quickest farmer, yes you can get yourself to the damage cap easily, but in an AE farm you can just keep eating inspirations and so storm wins out here. The one problem with this is you need to keep restocking up on reds in between missions, cutting into your farming efficiency and I have not calculated the difference including this. Best way to figure this out would be to just farm solidly on both kin and storm for an hour and see which one wins out, but I have yet to do this. I do know that storm will have a faster overall clear time without the restocking time included. The problem with a fire/storm corruptors though is that it doesn't have a heal which a corruptors needs even in farms as you'd need red and greens to make it efficient and I don't think you could enough of both. Which means you'd want to either go with primary with a decent heal and good aoe or a damaging/buffing secondary. Thus the best farming corruptor would probably be something like a water/storm (water has a decent heal with a lowish CD), but I'm not sure. The benefit of a ice blast corruptors for farming is that all the -speed and -recharge adds up allowing you to need less heals, so maybe a ice/storm would work, but I still know you'd need reds and some greens, just not sure how many.

Ok, how about this? It only has 39.1% AOE, but it does have melee and ranged softcapped. Most AOEs in the game have a melee or ranged tag, some don't, but I'd be willing to live with getting hit 11% of the time by those in exchange for avoiding everything else. AM and hasten are perma, souldrain is close to perma, and when souldrain is effecting you, you'll get the full base dmg on your snipe. Anyway, let me know what you think. If we are talking self power buffs only without inspirations, then many corruptors can outdamage blaster. Longs farm for instance, where a blaster could never stock enough reds to keep themselves at a comparable damage point. The corruptors pays for each of these buffs in cast time though, so my fire/kin on a long farm will outperform a blaster, but not by too much because I'm spending time casting fulcrum shift and siphon speed (both once every 20 seconds or so). The real benefit of a corruptors though is as a force multiplier, it's not as efficient for me to farm alone when I could team with a brute with both of us at the damage cap (775% for the brute and 500% for me). As others have mentioned, we do not get a plant secondary powerset, nature is similar in theme only (minus one shared power). If you want to be self-sufficient, most powersets can be io'd out to do that. I would recommend staying away from things like /Sonic though, as their greatest buffs require an ally. For myself, I love corruptors over blasters because you can do good damage while offering many benefits to the team and some of those benefits are huge ( /time can power boost+Clarion radial+farsight to give more than 30% def to the whole team for example). Corruptors are my favorite AT because I like the hybrid dps/support role in this game a lot, plus you can join blaster/corruptor teams and just shred everything. 😉

So, yes, absolutely you can do things at +0 this way, but maria jenkins isnt an endgame arc. I am talking about a team of 8 50s running around doing+4x8 ITF, MoM, Apex, Dark Astoria missions, TMII, etc. Range will kill you there, unless you have buffs coming from somewhere else.

So, the problem with this is at endgame mobs are everywhere and you will get hit to range and probably faceplant. You can't debuff everything with darkest night and fearsome stare, everything is just to spread out and all the combat is too quick.
