Stone hasn't had a bunch of love as an armor set.

Especially since Granite is essentially the Gold Standard for dang-near-unkillable.
Figured I'd see how tough one could conceivably build a Stoner without Granite.

And I'll start it off with this entry.

with a good IO build any armor set can be made to work .. I guess..

In modern CoH, non-Granite Stone works great because its' only real weakness to begin with was F/C and endurance costs, and purple sets/procs give you tons of F/C resist and endurance. You can even stack regen and heavily mitigate the movement speed debuff.

Hmmm  this could solve stones exemplar problem too

Since def and res sets have decent bonuses and can get the attuned versons.  That and uniques and purples.

I've teamed with some stone tanks leveling up and they seemed good at getting aggro, but died easily before granite.

But you only have to level up once after all... and as you suggest the set can be made good.

Does 5-slotting the GotA speed proc help this at all?

On Granite?  It's better than a kick between the goalposts.

Basically, outside of Granite, the slowdown's a pain, but it's not unmanageable.
Inside Granite is where things start falling over in terms of tanking speed.

It's possible to stack every movespeed IO set bonus possible and get to a "manageable" level when in boulder mode. Problem is you still need to use teleport if you want to move up a small ledge

Dude!  He couldn't even touch you!  You just spent 72 hours PBBBBT'ing in his face and talking *PANCAKE!* about his momma!

I'm actually very glad to see this.  I've been constantly wanting to TRY Stone Armor and constantly saying "But I has to see mah costume... at least SOME of it....".

This could bridge that gap nicely.

Happy to help!

@Hyperstrike was it required to use Spines, or would any melee set be adequate? I might have something stronger with one of my Stone/SS builds that I can share, but I could look to other sets like TW that offer up additional defense with their attacks and make something even stronger, if interested.

Don't underestimate the mitigation that comes from Rooted's regen bonus, especially when Earth's Embrace is active. I put 2500 or so hours on a Stone/EM tank back in the old days, and re-rolled him as Stone/Spines on Homecoming. The only time I turn on Granite is for major AV fights, or things like the Nictus ambush in the ITF. The rest of the time, having almost 3400 HP and regenerating 70 or so every second, combined with Rock Armor/Stoneskin/Fighting pool, is enough.

I don't bother with Brimstone or Crystal at all - but I slot the heck out of Rooted and EE, and built for perma-Hasten outside of Granite, to keep EE's health bonus up as much as possible. And I built to soft-cap psi defense with Minerals up (which isn't hard...), since there's nothing more embarrassing than a granite tank getting smoked by a bunch of Wisps or those floating idiots from Praetoria. I don't think I've turned Granite on at all in a Shard TF.

I'm also a fan of Teleport. Shift+LButton is my best friend.

It's a playstyle difference, in the end. You can definitely build a stoner to take advantage of def/res set bonuses. I just feel like the mitigation is good enough elsewhere, and there's enough Leadership floating around on any given team, that using set bonuses to counteract -spd, and give +regen, +HP, and +recharge, is more fun for me.

Don't underestimate the mitigation that comes from Rooted's regen bonus, especially when Earth's Embrace is active. I put 2500 or so hours on a Stone/EM tank back in the old days, and re-rolled him as Stone/Spines on Homecoming. I also set up macros for "Combat teleport to target" and "Teleport to target",  depending on range.

/macro CTP powexec_location target Combat Teleport

/macro TP Powexec_location target Teleport

@Hyperstrike was it required to use Spines, or would any melee set be adequate? I might have something stronger with one of my Stone/SS builds that I can share, but I could look to other sets like TW that offer up additional defense with their attacks and make something even stronger, if interested.

Pick me, pick me!!!  Would love to see that.  I need to respec and upgrade my titular toon:  PLVRIZR and have always wanted to try to max out a stone build.  He, too, is SS.

Again, there was nothing particularly special about Spines.
Now, that doesn't mean all sets will have an equally easy time.
It has to do with a particular set's mix of Single Target, Ranged, Targeted AoE and Point Blank AoE attacks.

If you want to be godlike, pick anything.

If you want to be GOD, pick a TANK!

Sounds awesome.  Are you willing to share your build?
