Blaster: Sonic/Devices. Safe. I'll give it that, but damage ultimately much lower than other Blasters to the point where I don't even know why you would roll a Blaster instead of a Sentinel. Sonic for Blasters works best with a strong damage oriented secondary, which Devices lacks.

Controller: Mind/Pain Domination. Busy low damage primary that feels like it should be providing more lock-down than it actually does combined with an equally busy equally low damage secondary that can get you into danger if you aren't careful. Unlike other controller primaries, you have no pets to buff with your secondary. Okay in teams, but are you even pulling your weight there?

Corruptor: Electric/Traps. Outside of Short Circuit which is more for endurance drain, Electric works best at range. Traps wants to be in your face inside of the mobs. Electric doesn't have any sort of rain power to take advantage of Corruption.

Defender: Sonic/Electric. This was my main back on Live. I played one all the way to 50 and continued playing it for a good amount of major patches. I originally made one because I never saw one and I like playing weird unusual combinations. Sonic felt fine, but Electric was so unnecessary. I felt like I didn't even have a secondary and I was not one of those Defenders never to use their blast set. Damage was too low and endurance drain was too minimal. Not quite sure how this still holds up and haven't re-rolled one on Homecoming yet. I imagine it's at least slightly better with IO's, incarnate, etc...

Mastermind: As others have said, Ninja/TA. Your pets will die off in seconds and you have no way to keep them alive.

I don't have enough experience with the other AT's to answer for them, but from what I've played, those are my votes.

Electric is better than before with IOS and fast snipe... but it still feels like a “what is it doing besides damage that’s not even the best”

Wow. Necro/Poison and Ninja/TA. I bow down to your superior masochism 😛

I had a Ninja/Poison MM in old live that I think I managed to get to level 33 on old live before sunset.  I figured that the character would finally click after I got him out of Sharkhead and it never happened.  One of my first villains, made in the day when MMs were villains only, I took my villainy to heart so he had a terrorist theme.  The weakness of the sets in question was almost made up for by his ability to put on a little show, where he had all the pets doing the 'praise'  kowtow emote, while he turned and faced them with the 'research' book emote.

I actually love Mind Control as a set. It's probably my personal favorite control set and I agree that once slotted out Dom/Lev/Mez/Terrify can be very solid for damage

Yeah, same... I played a mind controller back before Containment was added to the game and it was quite enjoyable. Whoever decided that Fear was exempt from Containment damage was a very silly person indeed.

Petless Robots/Empathy Mastermind...

Good luck! You my dear will absolutely need it! My friend attempted this as a solo-only experience and he made it to about level 21 before rage quitting the character completely even at the lowest settings possible.

You have some of the weakest attacks with no inherent benefit at all to help you, and then you have a set that does nothing for you except healing which isn't great mitigation for a lot of situations and doesn't provide any benefit to downing an enemy whatsoever!

Very (un)honorable mention:

Assault Rifle / Ninja Blaster... This is just terrible. There is nothing redeemable, its damage is lackluster, the survivability is awful, enemies will run away from you due to ignite so you can't even properly use your Ninja capabilities... it's a monstrosity.

Bon Voyage!

I'm loving my AR/MC but looking at the iirc 50 Fear on ignite I never took it

Fiery Aura/Energy Melee tanker.

It was interesting. My first redside 50 was an energy/energy brute and I *loved* it. Made a version of my blueside sorta-main (fire/ss) and said "You know, I enjoyed energy, let's make that change" and hated it as a tank. And it was more than just the one power change. It just didn't *click.*

I believe you are speaking of... Illusion Control? heh

It really is as close to a control-less controller you get, you do spend most of the time on the secondary with it too is from what I've seen (you kind of dump PA off and then start the gravy train).

My main issue with Illusion is "Hey, we need two invisibilties!" And... yeah, probably reliance on PA. Dark also throws pets in pretty early (Haunt as well as the dog) and that set doesn't feel control-light, so it's not that.

I can imagine this one is pretty bad based on my experiences with Psi-Ninja.

I did alright with a Archery/Ninja, but I haven't gone back to playing it after hitting 50

I took a Ninja/Poison to 50 back on live. It was painful, but I think I just wanted to say I had done it.

I also had an Ice/TA controller. Before they buffed Jack. Couldn't solo worth a damn but sure could control everything in sight. Was a bit better after picking up the epic attacks.

Kheldians,

~110 Hours logged

I only logged time on one Peacebringer to get 50 for thematic/RP use. Tried multiple build styles and PB's nor WS's ever clicked right for me, I find them too much a "middle of the road" traveler that just doesn't quite know where its going or what it needs to be. Even tried rerolling both a PB and WS here on Homecoming, got both to ~20 each before their (imo) awesome Yin/Yang styled twin-costumes just couldn't make up for my lack of desire to see them hit 50.

I'd rather play Trick Arrow.

They're swiss army knifes to me, good for compensating for things in the heat of the moment, need blast, need control, need tank but the one niche is in Nova with it's super amount of range, you can outrange quite a few things. At the very beginning of the game, you could of made 50 and levelled one on totally newbie teams, compensating for their mistakes changing forms to take over different jobs as needed.

Some players make their characters all about them, if it doesn't help them, they don't want it, their build advice to you will ofcourse be about making your character the best thing that helps them too if they ever team with you, because it's always about them.

It used to be Emp/Psi, I say that because just after I complained about how my TA/Archery DEF and Archery/TA Corrupter compared Vigilance got +damage. Before that I always moaned about tickling mobs to death. It gets boring when minions are like AVs to you. Empathy didn't make you offensive and no one did your missions. It's probably now slightly less of a ticklefest.

I don't want to call them "worst," since they were (and are, for the one I remade as is) quite good at what they do (control.and team support,) but two controllers:

Ice/Emp

Earth/FF

Played both to 50. Neither are particularly *fast* to solo. (Wasn't expecting them to be, but the times I did, well...:)  )

Honorable mention to a 50 bot/ff for being boring enough, especially after the "AOE Team buff" change, that it nearly turned me off MMs completely on live.

My Bot/FF was my first MM back in the day.  God it took forever upgrading each pet 2x, then shielding them each 2x.

Lowest Damage with worst survivibility, takes ages to defeat them, and you have to monitor your hp. In case your hp get really low you can use useless Personal Force Field to escape (usually you are too late). No Pets. I don't even know when I got to level 42 in first place. Really boring combo.

Fair enough. A lot my problems with MMs is just me being me. Maybe there are some real issues with them, but if you’re enjoying it then fair play.

As for /Sonic I just always find it boring. But actually maybe it would be more interesting on MM in the way it can raise your pets survivability and hep their damage.

Back on live - when I was trying to make that bots/ff work and it was pretty well driving me away from MMs as a whole - this was me. I went to the MM forum, pretty much described what was going on and said "So, is there a set I'll actually enjoy or is this class just not going to mesh with me?"

After a little discussion, they suggested a thugs/poison (since, really, I wanted to be busy, not a spectator) and that was a *fun* (and pretty fast) ride to 50.

So, yeah. It might be the sets. Or it might just be the AT not clicking with you. Nothing wrong with either one of those.

When they changed PA to a costume slot summon, I made an ill/sonic troller and went goldside.  Very bad.  Very ugly.  Got her to maybe 22 (went the first ward route instead of red or blue) then deleted and rerolled.  Sonic has lots of team buffs.  PA ignores them.  No teams goldside.  Very rough 22 levels lol.

Recently, someone commented that there weren't any level 50 AR/Dark Blasters in the stats.  So I took that as "Challenge accepted!" and rolled one up.  Now there is at least one level 50 AR/Dark Blaster (mine), and I won't ever do that again.

It was terrible.  It had all of the underwhelming performance of AR, combined with a complete lack of synergy with the Darkness secondary (which is definitely a blapper set, let me tell you).  It was tedious, it was painful, it was slow.  Never again.

I had no problem with Necro/Poison on live but I ran mine as a Tankermind with Provoke so maybe that's why.

I can't say I've ever made something I regret since I get a lot of leeway to concept, but my Petless Masterminds are certainly the most masochistic characters I've made over the years both on Live and here in Homecoming.

Blaster - AR/Devices, Ar being the lowest hitting (albeit fast recharging) AT  in the game, coupled with the most useless secondary in the game, just made life hell. And I trudged along for 50 levels of that nonsense....it never got better, IO's made Full Auto pretty much perma, but who cares? You're not killing anything with that tier 9 if your target is a red or above. On its own, Devices seems "cool" but its essentially, just a stealth secondary with a decent acc/dmg boost (Drone). I never used mines, mainly because waiting three-five seconds to set up a time bomb and several mines-per, was a waste of time. I Never soloed...and even then the experience was  trash.

Martial Arts.....looks tackey as all hell, slow, and really only used for the def bonus from said tackey looking move. Storm kick from the MA pool, needs to be replaced with Martial  Combat's Storm Kick...looks much better.

I'm enjoying my AR/Dev Blaster. But, I'm also not in any hurry to blitz through missions and kill everything right this instant. If I wanted that, I'd play my Fire/En Blaster.

I beg to differ with this statement.  My most recent level 50+3 is an Energy/Devices Blaster, and he's the most fun I've had in a long time.

IMO, Devices is probably one of the best Blaster secondaries: Targeting Drone gives over 97% ToHit for bonus damage on every snipe, and Field Operative is defense, endurance recovery, and stealth all rolled into one tidy power.  When combined with Smoke Grenade and/or Celerity +Stealth in Sprint, there isn't any mission or almost any mob I can't completely ghost with impunity.  Gun Drone is a great pet for ranged-only Blasters, as it serves as a great distraction and aggo magnet.  The available set bonuses for it are also pretty useful.

IMO, Trick Arrow is still the most useless secondary in the game -- at least until it gets the love I hear is coming Soon™ to HC.
