Screaming doom in an empty room or I need a hero

Recommended Posts

With the very obvious drop in population and the resulting fallout threads. Speculation, finger pointing, dogs and cats living together, and MASS HYSTERIA!!!!

*Ahem*

But, I digress, if you've done any reading about humans and all their squishyness or evolution. You know we as a species fixate on the "bad" its a survival mechanism, we remember the bad to make us more cautious so dinosaurs don't eat us so easily.

Or in this game so the badgers don't get ganked so easily in pvp zones.(but they do, hey dinosaurs need to eat too)

Some people are grumpy butts, overly opinionated, inflated egos, imaginative, desperate, speculative, wishful, etc, etc ad nauseum. We invent our discussions, questions, threads, builds, and whatever we can come up with. So now your asking, why?

Well thats simple it might be the knee jerk response to have our community continue on, legitimate question, starting trouble, or whatever conceivable or inconceivable reasoning we as our widdle brains can attest to fills us with emotion...of some sort.

We go on inventing and dare I say investing our precious time into this further continuation of our lil world. The big thing I have noticed is the DOOM threads,  now you might argue the point with your more rational side saying "no no thats not what I was saying " but....it is. Now whether you realize it or not, subconscious vs conscious decision to start these threads. We you me him or her, have all experienced the END, it happened once before Live did it to us and that damnable company that shall not be named.

So these threads pop up because let's face it folks, death comes for all of us. This game is no different.

So speaking of humans and their baggage, what happens when you get bored or something becomes repetitive or too easy.

Well, you invent something to do so you're not bored, try something different (shame on you mid life crisis people), or you go do something else.

I'm thinking more than likely that is occurring. This is my speculation. I know people that post on here that don't play or haven't played in awhile.  Hell I went from multiple times a week to maybe once or twice now. Not for any definite reason mind you but, I'm sure there are a ton of reasons. Which is what I did in a roundabout way above.

Coupled with the fact that there is no advertising, no inside info articles on gaming sites, etc, etc AND a volunteer team. Well you get the point, no new blood equals a timeline of existence.

PLUS, the ever constant reminder of the boogeyman aka the company that shall not be named and either the fictitious or very looming threat of that. I will not speculate on that, I don't read the gossip rags.

So draw your conclusions, speculate, or read the innards of some hapless sacrifice whatever. The lack of definitive information regarding what is exactly going on most definitively defines the future ability to formulate a plan to stave off the death knell of this world of ours.

As long as they keep getting enough funding to keep the servers running, I'm happy to keep playing and contributing.  If you personally want to combat the decline as you see it, then take part in some outreach.  Whatever you decide, let's please tamp down on the propagation of "FUD"...

The original forums had plenty of doom threads throughout the entire eight years of the game's first life.  The only differences between then and now are the venue and the time stamps.

And in spite of that, there's a server with people who were playing during the SCoRE years, who played the game when it was still "alive", who have nearly 20 years of play time and they're still not leaving.

The HC servers will continue to operate until no-one's donating any longer, and even if people trickle away, that's going to take a long, long time.  The Ouro code is openly available for download, so even after that, people can play.

The only thing that will end this game is the end of the universe itself.  It's certainly not going to happen because a few whiny chickenshits make panic posts about dOoOoOoOoOoOm over the game not having weekly content updates on one server group.

This seems to be an outgrowth of the "I wish I could donate money." threads.

It's well understood that not everyone can toss money at every passtime.
Real life has to take precedent (DAMMIT!).

So, how do you contribute?  How do you make sure you always have a home here?

  1. Play the game.  Yeah!  This is contribution.  Having people here to play with is a BIG thing!  I mean, I make REALLY decent money at my job and I could afford to just build/buy myself a server setup and keep it indefinitely.  BORING EFFING *BLEEP!*.  Because I have nobody to play with.  Simply by BEING HERE, you're contributing.  I don't have to do "City of Soloists".  You have NO idea how valuable that is!
  2. Participate in the community.  Gab on the forums.  Gab on FB.  Gab on whatever place you're on.  Hell, JUST TALK TO PEOPLE IN THE GAME!
  3. Recruit new players when you find people looking for something to do.
  4. Learn events  Then learn how to run them.
  5. If possible, try to help one another out in real life.  This isn't just things like "go fund me".  If you happen to be a subject matter expert on something a fellow player is having problems with, donate a little time, or at least a few short paragraphs helping them out.  If you upgrade your computer equipment?  Give yourself a couple months to make sure the new stuff is stable.  Then offer up the old stuff to other players who might be gaming on even OLDER stuff.  Me?  I donate stuff.  But you don't HAVE to (shipping's EXPENSIVE).  Asking for a token payment  to cover or may just slightly offset shipping.  Me? I ask that they pass it on, and think about donating the stuff they're replacing with to another community member.
  6. There's LOTS of ways to help the community out and help it grow.  Find something you CAN do, then do it!

So if any jerkass tells you "you aren't contributing" or are a leech on the community?  Point them them at the shortest pier you can find and invite them to a long walk.
NOBODY who is here should be made to feel "lesser", simply because you haven't thrown an arbitrary dollar amount at the game.

YES, money IS still important.  But keeping the community loyal and growing is at LEAST as important.  Because a larger community, ostensibly, lowers the number of people and dollar amount each of of those people have to contribute.  You increase the amount that CAN be raised, and can stretch the monetary donor base further.  This way, if people "miss" months, you don't run the risk of coming up short.  And if one doesn't have to donate as much, as often, they can bank that cash against emergencies. For the game, or for themselves.

So, like I said.  If you can find something that helps the community in some way.  Whatever it is, do it!  Contribution doesn't have to be a dicksizing contest.
Besides, I'll ALWAYS be bigger.  But DAMN if the calluses from it dragging on the ground behind me (LOOK MA!  GODZILLA!) are annoying!

🤣😂🤣😂 🤣😂🤣😂

I've said in previous posts that I've reached out to everyone I know, even people from other games I'm involved in. Some people have joined, some have not, and he'll I've contributed to the honeypot a time or two.

The point of my thread was a pretty broad stroke, I tried to cover as much as possible on every aspect of what I have recently seen.

Sure there might be a time that the game does die, and sure not having a healthy population does effect things either directly or indirectly.

Honestly in my head which I covered in my final paragraph is why don't we market indirectly? At least call up some gaming sites and twitch reviewers and let them know where we are headed. Are the devs afraid it might paint a bullseye on us? It's the lack of knowledge of such things that I find bothersome.

But, then again I don't team with anyone besides my vgmates. Although I do like to see other players around.

I have no direct knowledge to the answer to this question, so all I can do is guess.  But here's my guess.  It's because this is a hobby.  They're doing this for fun.  In fact they did it for 7 years privately in some distant corner of the internet with just themselves playing.  I'm guessing the biggest reason there's no marketing is because it doesn't sound like it would be much fun.

I've not followed all the "doom" and "recruitment" threads closely (I've too short a lifespan for that) but I'd be willing to guess there's a fair sized population that's like me, cooling our jets for a bit, then returning to play.  I just finished a 2-month mostly away period to deal with some real life issues, and to try out a few solo player games.  Time away helps keep the game fresh.  There's also the matter that the northern hemisphere is approaching summer, with more daylight hours, and fewer COVID-restricted places, so people will be getting out of the house more.  I suspect several will saunter back into the game when darkness and winter return to the hemisphere.

Just look at the southern hemisphere heading towards their cold season.  I'm pretty sure you'll find that our Aussie population has increased by...uh... 3 already.  Progress.

Because they would have the same marketing budget as the Legacy team had...

I definitely believe that this silence that we've been receiving from the Council of Thirteen is only making the problem worse.

They really should post something, anything, at least once a month. If only to let us know that they're still alive. I'm not saying constant updates and progress reports, but a "Hi, everyone! We're still alive. Here's a hint on what we're working on." would do a lot to keep interest up and put concerns to rest.

They could even, heaven forbid, ask us what kinds of things we'd like to see fixed/changed/updated.  🤣  Yeah, I know. I'm a funny guy. But hey, that's why you'll kill me last. Right?
