We're playing a 15 year old game that closed officially 8 years ago. Using time metrics when discussing it seems silly. Also, I think this is a thing forums need to do less of, there's nothing wrong with revisiting a topic that is still an issue even years later.

Agree completely.  Also, I think one of the main 'gripes' about necroposting is that people might not realize there has been a large gap in time.

However, since this forum software explicitly highlights the gap with the following method:

Capture.jpg.f9ffc163e92c0583660484a0ca2f33d4.jpg

necroposting doesn't really seem as much of an issue as it used to be.

My main baddie on Live was named Devourer. Homecoming had been going for a year before I discovered it so it was taken on Everlasting. After a two minute brainstorm session I decided to do a play on Nemesis?:

Devourer?

10 years ago, after a long and infamous career, the villain known as Devourer disappeared. Six months ago a woman bearing remarkable physical similarities and powersets to Devourer appeared in Paragon City. However this time she appeared to be fighting on the side of angels. Is this the same woman who once terrorized the streets of Paragon City? Has the Butcher of Brickstown truly reformed? Or is she perhaps a clone or a robot impersonator or a visitor from an alternate reality? Only time will tell.

About once a month I try to rename her. Maybe one day I'll be able to visit Null the Gull and release evil on Paragon's citizens once more. In the meantime, sure I guess I'll go clear out that Council base again.

I love Nemesis? so much that I use that convention a fair amount.

To be sure, the online game managed to take all the great parts of the Champions tabletop game and eliminate them.

For sure. From my point of view, they threw out the baby and keep the bath water.

And then they had the nerve to retcon the RPG to fit the rules they used for the MMORPG (which were originally for their Marvel Universe game).

If someone posts a reply quoting me and I don't reply, they may be on ignore.

Some players know that I have them on ignore and are likely to make posts knowing that is the case.

But the fact that I have them on ignore won't stop some of them from bullying and harassing people, because some of them love to do it. There is a group that have banded together to target forum posters they don't like. They think that this behavior is acceptable.

Pretty much every single obvious name I could think of has been taken.

Obviously.

-The ORIGINAL UltraViolent

Could always try for U(capital i)traVio(capital i)ent?

Maybe people never ran into Parallel Illusion in the old days? As I recall they were a PVP group. All with the same "looking" name. Same costume and size.

I have had two character names out of my 100+ characters that was already taken.

One a friend had taken to hold onto for me until I decided to start playing.

The other one - which was created for a project outside of gaming, that I had before the sundown on CoH, and I have in DCUO - was taken on Torchbearer  (might not be taken on the other servers, but I haven't bothered looking). Tweaked part of the name and worked sent through the first time.

Obviously, if the name isn't very creative, it's obvious. If it's obvious, obviously it has already been taken.

Now I'm wondering if Obvious and Obviously are taken. Better grab Obviousman and Obvious Lad while you can ... or Obvious Jr (Junior?)

Obviously Ultraviolent

I was also about a year late to HC (was pre-I1 on Live), and most of my tank names were gone (because they were popular), so I started with the "license plate" theme...see sig.  Has worked, reasonably well.

I got most of the names I had on live with the exception of "Hercules" and "NorthStar".

I really wasn't expecting to get old Herc back, but it still hurt. :)

Both are pretty obvious names.

I'm surprised that NorthStar wasn't nerfed or blocked as it is obviously a Marvel character.

Hercules is generic enough that no one should feel like they have any right to have that name for their own and should feel lucky that they were able to get it.

I see no reason anyone should willingly give up the name.

I was super lucky to bag every name I wanted to keep from live plus my new main. Although I'm destined to never ever get Heavy Mental or Medievil lol.

Also when CoV released I couldn't log in because something like the first 15 names I chose were taken.😅

That is the one thing that Champions Online did better - Cryptic really did learn the right lesson from the complaints about character naming in CoX.

I disagree. I think that was one of the many things they did wrong. If I had a nickle for every character I had seen with the name Frost I would have been a rich man. It took being unique completely out of the equation. That's the thing I like about this game. That battle has been fought many times in CoH, even on this forum, and that battle is won by the people who prefer unique every time.

I wonder if FUBAR is taken...

Not sure if this is an obvious name, and therefore taken.

Even if it isn't obvious - I bet it's gone.

PEBKAC too.

and ID10T...
