COH popularity dwindling

Diantane

Recommended Posts

Can remember the LFG chat area being extremely busy a couple years ago. Today even at peak times there's barely a message going by. I figured that it would pick up over the weekends. Not anymore. So I look at the server population. Here it is Monday morning. Not going to be many on at this time. Maybe a couple hundred on Excelsior.

Then I look at the population of other MMO's this morning:

World of Warcraft 325,612

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn 447,398

Baldur's Gate III: 310,204

Old School RuneScape: 272,713

Path of Exile: 176,929

Warframe: 168,712

There are hundreds of mmo's these days and the gaming population of the world have moved on to the most popular of them.

Twenty five years ago, there were only three mmo's - Asheron's Call, Sierra Online and Everquest

I used to make a new character (alt) on COH and get others to run the arcs. I'd be level 50 in 2-3 days. This Saturday and Sunday evening I can't find one player. Unless you play solo, this emulator is done for most.

You complain about server population... on a Monday morning? Today is Veteran's Day in the United States, folks are likely sleeping in or have other plans.

Those times you saw no footprints, I had Fly toggled on.

You know, sometimes I just can't with this poster.

They say they're leaving, they say other players are leaving, they say they know how to play every Archetype and they know how to do everything in game the right way (their way). And they won't even acknowledge other players could possibly want to do something else other what they want to do in game. The population is fine. It's healthy and resilient.

I think enough players just don't want to team with @Diantane at this point.

Edit: Screenshot about an hour after Diantane's rant.

BG3 is not an MMO

Path of Exile is not an MMO.

As far as CoH pop goes its a consistent 1400 or so. 5 years ago it was a lot more because of nostalgia, once that wore off it’s just the hardcore audience left.

If crazy and imo asinine development in powers can’t tank this game, I truly think almost nothing can. It’ll be fine.

More D not knowing what he's talking about.

Baldur's Gate is not an MMO, for instance. It is an RPG with an (optional) online teaming component. Neither is Warframe. Warframe's as much an MMO as Call of Duty or Overwatch is. Or are you going to claim those are MMOs as well?

WOW was and sort of still is a behemoth. It has a long time to come down from its peak population of millions. I seem to recall numbers (and arguments about the numbers and how Asian cafes affected them) in the 7-12 million subscriber range. So them being down to 300-odd thousand? "Yeah, and?"

There's no MMO named "Sierra Online." Sierra Online was a game development company founded by Ken and Roberta WIlliams that made outstanding games (like Kings Quest, Police Quest and Phantasmagoria) before they were bought out a few times and finally shuttered. Were you maybe thinking of Ultima Online? (Said game not created by Sierra Online.)

There were also more than three MMOs running in 1999 (25 years ago.) Some were simpler, yes. The genre, the ways of accessing the internet and the computers that ran them were much less capable.

This is also not an "emulator." Look up the term before you use it.

As far as "the gaming population of the world has moved on to..." - so what? COH at its peak - when people could see the boxes in store and buy them retail - was never huge. And most of the people interested in COH are people who played COH when it was live and/or their kids.  We're a small, volunteer run server, no budget, no advertising to speak of. Your comparisons are ridiculous. Or is this another post where you promise to leave, but don't?

Also "Can't find one player" on Saturday night? I know full well *that's* not true. Maybe not responding to D. That I could believe.

Gaming of all sorts is down be it MMO's, Table top RPGs, Miniatures wargaming, etc...but it's nothing to do with the games themselves but more about the economy and cost of living. Hard to justify spending time playing games when you're having to struggle to make ends meet.  That said...CoH, as others have said, is doing fine overall and is still a good solid game.

Times are indeed tough but no gaming is nowhere near down. Black Myth Wukong is literally one of the fastest selling games this year and that’s just one game.

This article is from last year but this gives an idea of the industry too. Also last year I believe revenue was $66.5 bil, up from 2022(?)’s $60 bil.

Gaming’s doing alright. CoH is doing alright too.

Here's a summary of just how asinine your post is.

- CoH didn't have those numbers on Live at the end.

- The game is 20 years old.

- It was shutdown 12 years ago.

- The current version known to the public has been running for 5 years,

How dare a game like that can't simply draw the same numbers as a current GotY contender. Maybe you should compare it to other games in a similar situation. You could also show actual data of how the numbers have dropped off versus your gut feeling.

In all honestly, I've never been so bored that I wasted time telling a player base how much their game sucks as much as you do. I've tapped out on numerous games. I've never then gone to the game's forum and posted a single negative post about the game. I simply left. At some point, you need to ask yourself WTF you are here. Either you stay and shut the hell up, or you just leave.

There are only 3 actual MMOs on that list.

Also, WoW only has 325,000 players?  That's gotta be only "concurrent players".  I know their sub count is still measured in millions.

Also-also, as reply 1 says, it's flippin' Monday morning.  If you want to talk about population, measure on Saturday night.

Your boos mean nothing; I've seen what makes you cheer.

I see Diatane is being their typical inane self as usual. There's no need for folks to debate you on yet another one of your nonsense threads.

Besides, didn't you make a hallmark drama thread of your intentions to quit CoH?
