So what you're REALLY saying is....

I can't make 'buttfacegasattack?

Wrong. You can't make Unwipedbuttfacegasattack.

..It only takes one Beanbag fan saying that they JRANGER it for the devs to revert it.

Not just bawdy double entendres, I'm fine with those, despite what others posting here might have you think of me.  These were particularly tasteless names that reek of 4chan's /pol/ board.  If those sorts of people are moving in, I'll be moving out.

Really should have listened to the little voice in the back of my head that said I shouldn't have posted about this, because it would be misrepresented by some.   From now on, this is going to be between me and the mods, thanks.

Here's an idea, OP. Why don't you stop complaining about the kids, with their dancing and their demonic rock-and-roll, and just let Elvis perform on the Ed Sullivan Show without trying to censor him and complain that he's a Satan worshiper?

If you don't like peoples' names just roll your eyes and move on.

Being constantly offended doesn't mean you're right, it means you're too narcissistic to tolerate opinions different than your own.

No need to be snippy with the OP, if a name offends, it's offensive. If the Mods think it'll offend a lot of people, out comes the generichammer. Otherwise, agreed, /em eye_roll and move on.

Some people don't seem to realize the kind of crap you see on the /pol/ boards on 4Chan, or they just enjoy mocking someone for being offended.

Which, by the way, asshole moves people.

Either way, OP, best ignore these jerks and take it directly to the GMs. I haven't seen the ones you did, but knowing /pol/, I understand exactly why you're upset, and why you don't want to repeat any of the names you've seen.

No, I'm glad you did, and I'm a little disappointed at some of the responses.

I'm not in the least put off by silly, punning or even mildly double-entendre names; most make me groan or grin.

But it's a big jump from that to truly offensive terms and names that provoke only a negative response from everyone who isn't 12 or a 4chan troll. Anyone who can get all puffy or defensive about 'freedom' in this respect probably can't define either word except as "But I Wanna!"

If you can't be reasonably civil, this isn't the civilization you're looking for.

Some people just want to look like twelve-year-old edge-lords.

I guess they think it's funny, or clever or that by flying their dork flags high they'll somehow "own the prudes" or something? I don't know... It's a strange mindset, but it's also  common enough in virtual spaces to draw some comparisons between those humans and the habits of other poo-flinging primates.

Don't think I didn't notice the implication that there are at most 99 villains ingame. 😛

If someone is looking to offend or anger someone, either specifically or generally, in my mind that's bullying.  If someone is trying to skirt the rules of bullying in order to get a rise out of someone, that's bullying.

This is all beyond my paygrade, but anyone who's shouting "look at me look at me look at me I'm offensive!!!!!1!1!" can best be dealt with by being made invisible.

(Maybe you can tell I don't stand for bullying).

I don’t have a problem with most of the stuff Blackbird posted, for instance. But I am naturally skeptical of alleged offensiveness these days considering some of the things that tiny minorities of people have decided to find offensive in the last 5 years (and considering how much defamation is mainstream). So my inclination is unfortunately to disbelieve the offended without receipts. Not that you have to give details if you don’t want to, but if not I’m afraid I can’t back you up.

Part of being civil is also tolerating other people doing things that you don't like.

This means not being the nosy person constantly peering out of the curtains and calling the police on those mean ole neighbor kids because they set up a lemonade stand. Or telling their parents when you overhear them using a "naughty" word. Or complaining because someone names their character Pig Benis.

You all sound like the cranky old spinster aunt at the family reunion who makes annoyed faces every time she hears children laughing and having fun.

Let the children have their fun!

The "stuff[ I ]posted" is literally the rules you agree to when you play on HC.  You make it sound like it's my own personal list of issues.

I’m aware. And like I said I’m fine with most of it. I say most because there are a couple items there that no one cares about / reports / enforces.

If there are parts of it you're not fine with and you don't agree to, you can always go somewhere else.  Whether you care about anything on that list does not change that those are the rules.  But don't try to speak for everyone and claim that "no one" cares, because clearly someone does.

Given we don't have examples, I'd say you're making assumptions about the poster.

Yes, they could be more annoyed at certain names that happen to hit some sore spot with them, and they could ignore them and "should let the kids have their fun."

Or the kids could be spraying graffiti and leaving bags of dog crap on their property, in which case they have every right to complain.

We don't have the information either way. No need to get judgey on the OP. If the OP thinks there's a problem, they should go to the GMs.

Some people think it's ridiculous to take offense at everything under the sun, and emphasize that ridiculousness by satirizing what people think is offensive.  That's not bullying, it's reminding people that they're adults, and adults need better coping strategies than expressing mortification and outrage at every minute thing that gets the teeniest bit under their skin.  Somewhere along the way, we forgot how to let things roll off of our backs.  People who force us to either remember how to do that again, or die of a heart attack at a young age because we're freaking out over meaningless bullshit, are necessary.

We can all use some "Lighten up, Francis." in our lives.  It gives us the proper perspective so we can see what's really worth being offended over (pro-tip: a ribald name, off-color joke or bit of skin isn't it).

Do you think players should actually expect to be banned if they mention smoking a joint?

It is if it violates the CoC, which is where I think we need to focus.  The HC team has laid down the standard for what names are inappropriate.  Names that violate that standard need to be addressed.  Names that do not, we just deal with.

I'll leave the determination of the appropriate disciplinary action to the GMs, but I hardly think they would go straight to a ban if such an act was a player's only offense.

And some people think it is ridiculous to be offensive just so people will pay attention to you.  Adults need better coping mechanisms than to say, "oh c'mon, those swastikas were a joke!  Lighten up Francis!"  or "Oh c'mon, calling you a **** was just a joke, I have one of those myself, I'm reclaiming the word!  Lighten up Francis."  If you are trying to hurt someone, you are being a bully.  You don't have to agree with me, but you have to understand that I have a valid point.

Use your judgment in your personal life.  I'll rely on Homecoming GMs to use theirs.  And if someone tells you you're being an a------, you can either ignore them and be more of one, or you can ask yourself, "Why am I being such an a------?"

I concur that "bullying" is the wrong term and concept here, but this is a BS attitude. Sorry.

A general agreement to "play nice" in this special space means deliberate offensiveness is out of bounds, regardless of your sanctimonious intent.

Idk. If there’s one thing that offends me it’s the perpetually offended.
