Diantane Posted December 3 Posted December 3 When LIVE first started everyone just had training, dual origin and single origin enhancements (possibly a HAMI if they did a very tough set of missions). Today many players use special enhancements that give them "sets" of buffs. Since I don't play a toon much past 50 (if I even get there at all), sets are worthless to me. So I always play "old school." Note: I'm 69 years old so I guess I'm an old dog that can't learn new tricks 🙂 1
Snarky Posted December 3 Posted December 3 Actually after 25 or so (definitely 30) sets have a significant advantage over SOs. Remember people hoarded them long before incarnate stuff. 4
Black_Assassin Posted December 3 Posted December 3 Being 69 years old is no excuse to not learn something new. Either way, play however you want I guess? 4 @Black Assassin - Torchbearer
Captain Fabulous Posted December 3 Posted December 3 You don't need to be level 50 to benefit from set bonuses or global IOs. 5 1
CFIndustries Posted December 3 Posted December 3 You can certainly play with just SOs, I have a whole group of friends that tends to. When everone is at this level, it can be quite fun because you have to use your brains as much as your brawn. And you just don't turn it up to +4/x8 or level as fast. Not really an issue in the company of good friends and players. I used to run SO-only to 50 on Live since I was generally too broke and couldn't make a fancy IO-based build to save my life. So I'd level to 50 and retire the alt. The caveat is you really can't play with the big kids…incarnate content, Dark Astoria arcs, Cimerora all are quite tough on just SOs and can make you feel like a bit of dead weight. At least that's how I always felt in the post-40 game after IO sets were a thing. I'm not quite as old as you are, but no spring chicken either. I still can't build my way out of a paper bag, but I learned to find builds in the forum, use MIDS to view them, and sometimes make a frankenbuild. And I found ways to make the funds I need to build them and still satisfy my altitis. As for the "when"…I tend to wait until around 32 before bothering to kit-out a build with IO sets. I just run SOs until then, since I've rarely found trying to use a pre-made build was worth the time, expense, or awkwardness until 27–32 or so. I slowly go from 0-50 playing as near to the correct level as I can…no farming and only a very brief use of XP doublers. 1

Apogee Posted December 3 Posted December 3 I start using IO sets at level 7. No need to wait until 50 unless you are new to the game. 2 1
SeraphimKensai Posted December 3 Posted December 3 1 hour ago, Maelwys said: Especially ATOs. They are about as worthless as actually putting fuel in your car instead of pushing it up a hill barefoot. This is definitely true for Stalkers, Scrappers, and Tanks. Less true for Domis and Brutes. Personally though I slot IOs at soon as I am able to. I usually have them bought or crafted before I even roll the toon. 1
OEM61 Posted December 3 Posted December 3 I too am old, but it's not about age. SOs are fine. They offer a good boost. But Set IOs offer many other benefits beyond just the boosts to whatever numbers of the powers they are slotted in. When I came back I made a personal SG for my toons and added 8 enhancement tables. At first it was a table for every SO and then three tables to hold some different DOs, As I played my first hero and started crafting, I sold off all of the DOs and even the magic SOs that I wasn't using (that first toon was magic, so I sold what I wasn't going to use) to make room for IOs. As of yesterday, starting on my second "main" after hitting 50 with that first toon*, I sold off the rest of the SOs and converted four tables into hold basic SOs and the other four tables into holding set IOs. Simple IOs save me a lot of money. Still "new" to the game in that sense, so it helps. Eventually I'll get to a point where I have "money to spare" but I am not there yet. Slotting an enhancement that I can get some benefit from for as long as I wish, even if the benefit is lesser than an SO, is a good thing for me. I'll slot in a higher level enhancement at some point, or maybe switch out for a different set when it becomes available when I can slot those, but I don't need to rush it. SOs and DOs don't give me that luxury and the cost of staying up-to-date adds up fast. ============= * Off-topic, but I may end up deleting and re-rolling that one anyway (reasons), but I have basically remade my old toons. Two blasters that I spent the vast majority of my time with, a couple of tankers (one now rolled as a blue-side brute) a defender (now rolled as a blue-side corruptor) and a controller that I dabbled with once in a while. Now that all ATs are open for all sides, I have a few other toons rolled that I plan on at least trying out, though I may not keep them.
JKCarrier Posted December 3 Posted December 3 I'll slot SOs until somewhere around level 20-30. Then I switch to common IOs, just because I don't have to replace them as often. I'll throw some procs in Health and Stamina if I feel like I need the boost, which I usually do. On some characters, if I have a lot of Inf to burn and/or feel like experimenting, I'll start slotting sets to see what happens. I know that the math-lovin' MIDS experts can finagle some impressive bonuses that way. But for me, doing exclusively sub-50 solo content, I honestly don't notice much difference. --- 64453 - This Was Your Life? - An AE arc that lets you relive your hero's greatest triumphs! MoonSheep Posted December 3 Posted December 3 it’s definitely worth using some of the procs and other unique IOs before lvl 50 the majority of the ones worth having are available by lvl 22 - LoTG +Rech, Miracle +Recovery, the two 3% +Def ones are available at lvl 7 i believe, same with the +5% res one a lot of the ATO procs are worth having too If you're not dying you're not living

Sovera Posted December 3 Posted December 3 Hello again, Dian. Up to level 25-30 SOs are much better, the lower level the better. By level 7-10, which is when we can start wearing IOs, the numbers are crushingly in favor of SOs. But by level 25-30 they catch up and surpass IOs just on raw stats without even talking about the bonuses. You can respect and save the IOs for your next alt instead of buying them. Or don't and stick with IOs, it'll work out too. - Simple guide for newcomers. - Money making included among other things. - Tanker Fire Armor: the Turtle, the Allrounder, the Dragon, and compilation of Fire Armor builds. - Tanker Stone Armor: beginner friendly (near) immortal Tanker for leveling/end-game and Stone Armor framework. - Brute Rad/Stone and compilation of Brute Stone Armor builds.

How I read this: "Since I don't play a toon much past 50 (if I even get there at all), I CHOOSE not to use invention origin enhancements - since reaching 50 has NOTHING to do with using IO's." I buy all my characters IO's when they're approaching level 30 and start slotting them around level 35. Why would anyone think they have to wait until level 50? Ukase Posted December 4 Posted December 4 In all seriousness, at least you're using enhancements. There's more than a few who can't be bothered to blow some inf on any enhancements until...I have no idea. I think I read one guy didn't use them at all until 22. The game changes when you start using Set IOs. Things get a little easier, but they can also get more confusing. There's no rule of 5 with a damage SO. Fortunately, our community has some super smart people who break the mysteries down so most folks who have the patience to literally read the posts can figure it out. But if you skim...you're likely to get lost. The skimmers today! Why can't they read my big page of text?
