Which sets stand out on a Brute?

Galaxy Brain

My Dark/Dark Brute is a standout.  Not needing a Tankers extra values to be extremely Tanky, Would benefit from more Aoe (who wouldnt?) /but the damage output when fully revved up is extreme.

Likewise my Dark/Invul Brute.  Whose real job is to be 1)hit on (I need aoe for this?) 2) Kill the Big Boss (I need Aoe for this?) Again, having Tankers AoE would be great.  Just not necessary, likewise health and resist numbers.  it does the job better (in my opinion) than a Tank version.

There is a bit of overexageration on the tanker buffs. As someone who was super heavy on tankers post patch and then played brutes for a while, and then tried getting back to tankers, I can say brutes are very safe in the damage dealing angle.

Even my favorites like Fire/MA hit like rheumatics barely ahead clearing a TF -with- Fiery Embrace -and-  Burn compared to a Brute with just its standard PbAoE.

Farmers have said the same that despite buffs Brutes still are ahead.

But it is true that they are squishier. Hard to beat an AT who has modified values and a 20% to all resists that comes free. Not even a sacrifice since 4 slotting the set gives 10% recharge, and leave the skill with good enough raw stats that the remaining two slots can go to damage procs.

You know this from our talks already, but I think savage is the only primary I could say performs better, or at least on par with scrapper and doesn't feel like you're that much weaker on damage.

With secondaries, it's a much easier question, given brute stat caps and ATO bonuses being kinda nuts for stacking resist.

Oddly enough I continue to work on my Savage/rad Brute and compare it to my Rad/ice Tank. To be fair, the Tank is a few levels higher, and I could slightly tweak the Brute build, but I tried upping the diff around to what the Tank was doing and the lack of Ice Patch was obvious. Only slightly tempted to do a Ice/rad Brute, but having soloed 29 levels on the Tank, I want to just keep going with it.

I'm really digging EA on my brute right now. I just got my Rad/EA to 50, and currently has incarnate capped defenses (cept psi), 40-50s on most resistances, two heals, good regen, and an end recovery power to boot. Irradiated ground is already good other ATs, but is fantastic on a brute with all the procs going on top already good damage. I'd be interested in trying EA if it ever got ported to tanks, but I think the combo flat out works better on a brute IMO.

The only stand out for a Brute is how IG works with Fury with you loading up on damage procs. A Tank would get bigger AoEs and a +Res proc ATO.

To add, I like Resist sets on a Brute since having the +Res proc on a Resist set for a Tank might be a bit of overkill.

This is true. You can't underestimate that damned res proc.

Hard to underestimate being able to triple stack a single IO for 20.1% damres to EVERYTHING.

So damned broken.

Fury proc should honestly either raise the cap of Fury, or have some additional damage modifier per fury (Like 0.5% per point of fury) to give more damage

I re-rolled my Savage/Bio Scrapper as a Brute to get more HP in the heals and regen and it's doing great.  Seems to be on par with damage (running in Offensive mode I'm almost always showing ~270% damage buff).

The only other Brute I've been able to stick with is Super Strength/Electric. Everything else I've been happier with on Tanks or Scrappers.

Edit: Correction, have a Staff/Invuln brute I'm really happy with. I hated Staff on Tanks and hated Invuln on Scrappers, but on a Brute it's a good combo.

I think it's largely because scrapper savage doesn't really have a good attack to put the ATO in, especially since hemo sucks.

There's vicious slash, but you'd want vicious slash to benefit from the proc. So brute catches up to them, since that proc is basically the only thing putting scrappers on the map still.

On the opposite end, I find the Scrapper ATOs, really favors sets like Claws and DB since they can dump the +50% Crit proc into such a low damaging attack.

This is kind of niche, but out of the melee classes, only brutes and stalkers get Superior Conditioning and Physical Perfection from the Body epic pool, meaning that they can achieve a lot more endurance recovery than scrappers or tanks doing the same.  With really endurance-intensive matchings, that helps a lot.  Well, at least until you unlock incarnates.

Who run Bartertown?

Leap is the best spot for it on Savage Scrapper.  For the price of one %dmg piece it's as near as "on demand" crits as a Scrapper is going to get.  There's enough time to fire VS and RF for certain, maybe cram another single target swing in the middle.

Not ideal for other reasons, like only having it every +/- 15s at best without tanking the proc chance and building for a boat load of global recharge as well as forcing Leap into single, hard target encounters which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

You see a mousetrap? I see free cheese and a f$%^ing challenge.

That's kind of what I was saying. The best options for it aren't exactly ideal.

War mace has jawbreaker and shatter, claws has follow up, Katana has GD and GC, stone has seismic, energy has bone smasher and rad has DB. They can all kinda field it without losing out on something, Savage has to kind of give up something for it.  Uptime isn't great with it in SL, either.

Leap on St encounters seems standard to me, though. The FOTG and really fast cast and proc-ability just makes it seem like a no-brainer to swap in over a maiming/savage strike when it's up. I do it all the time on my brute.

Wow, this was quite the necro, skipping over all of 2021. Nonetheless, I want to play. I will say Energy Melee for Brutes is incredibly strong in its ST capabilities, relative to Tanks (but AoE tankers will win out easily).

At damage cap (which favors the tank more because of their higher base scale damage), the EM attacks will have Brutes winning slightly:

Brute: 7 x 0.75 = 5.25

Tank: 5 x 0.95 = 4.75 (90.5% of Brute)

But now throw in Epics. I like Soul which gives me Gloom and Dark Obliteration. Brute scalar is 0.75 while tank scalar is 0.80. That gives the following relationship:

Brute: 7 x 0.75 = 5.25

Tank: 5 x 0.80 = 4.00 (76.2% of Brute)

Of course, being at damage cap is a bit of a challenge to keep up. So let's be more realistic and assume the Brute has 85% Fury (170% damage buff), and both ATs have +150% damage from enhancements and possible outside buffs.

Brute: (1+1.7+1.5) x 0.75 = 3.15

Tank: (1+1.5) x 0.95 = 2.375 (75.4%)

While the Epics would be

Brute: 3.15

Tank: (1+1.5)x0.8 = 2.00 (63.5%)

I am currently "maining" a Dark/Invul Brute.  I soloed 1-50 every contact on him.  I still need to finish the 50 stuff.  Very strong

A standout on Brutes is Dark/Dark.  I believe this performs better on a Brute than any other AT.  While I will always be jealous of Tanker AoE it has moderate real effect here, at best. Scrapper would do slightly better damage but would be lacking the Health that the design needs with the strange defenses and massive heal strategy.

That's actually why I can only play dark armor on a tank. Just feels way too squishy for me on a brute or scrapper. Haven't tried it on a sentinel yet.

I've been rather enjoying Brutes of late and have two built for concepts:

  • Wizard Of The West - Staff/Fire: pretty much Hell's own lawnmower. Great against groups, lacks a killer single target alpha punch. Generally stick with the Psi bonus from Forms. Wasn't built specifically for farm teams but does well on them.
  • Agent Atwell - Strength/Shield: based on a forum thread arguing about what Cap (and SuperPeggy) would be and was trying to figure out what worked well. She's the opposite of the Wizard - amazing against one target at a time so far at L24. Smash a Boss into the air and pummel their health bar into the ground before they get a shot in. Deeply satisfying, but a distinct lack of AOEs so far - Sands Of Mu are working hard. Foot Stomp and Shield Charge will come as Goddess-sends at 32 and 35, and give me the crowd clearance options. Haven't taken Hand Clap as it's just a stun and KB, when I kinda need everything staying in PEGGY SMASH range. Shield has a nice balance of Def and DamRes to see you through early levels, though wondering what to do about slotting.
  • Still considering a Street Justice build of some kind, as I'm imagining the combos should work well with the Rage bar. Secondary suggestions welcome.

Dark.  Stack Cloak of Fear with the Fear affect in StJ's PbAoE.  Lean into Presence Pool for Invoke Panic, which has a HUGE radius.

I would add in Cross Punch for AoE when using SS. That at least puts it at Cone + PBAoE level. Plus, you can at least slot it and it has a quick animation time versus Sands of Mu.
