Black Zot Posted October 3, 2019 Posted October 3, 2019 I hear lots about /Radiation on controllers, but pretty much all of it seems to be about pairing it with Illusion Control. Played it before, don't really feel like leveling another Ill/Rad. But I do like /Rad. Kinda drawing a blank on a primary to go with it. So what goes well with /Rad, besides Ill/? Any shenanigans to be had? (Shenanigan Control should totally be a thing.)
Frostweaver Posted October 3, 2019 Posted October 3, 2019 Plant/rad, fire/rad. and electric/rad all perform extremely well. 1

I just (re)rolled one and quite enjoy its synergies. Its stronger than what I remember and has worked out quite well into the high 30s so far. At this point I'm still debating on which epic pool (other than Psi) to go with. Earth epic goes well (or used to). Melee friendly attacks with control, def armour and a +hp. My Fire/Rad/Earth was a lot of fun. The new pool power set looks like it may synergise well too. Nightmarer Posted October 3, 2019 Posted October 3, 2019 I personally always favored Earth/Rad, with Fire epic and a shitload of procs the dmg output is good plus the awesome control and debuff. Won't find a better char for Katie Hannon TF.
The_Warpact Posted October 5, 2019 Posted October 5, 2019 I rolled an elec/rad, in the mid 20's now and it destroys everything. Has been good solo and team, bosses, monsters, mobs, HA! Locked down, no end, debuffed on everything they just stand there and quiver lol. https://www.twitch.tv/boomie373 The Revenants twitch channel, come watch us face plant, talk smack, and attempt to be world class villains.
Hyperstrike Posted October 6, 2019 Posted October 6, 2019 Fire/Rad gets epic pretty fast. Fire/Rad super-teams are just a horde of firey death-roombas. I ran the regular Fire/Rad Superteam on Freedom for 2-ish years. 1 If you want to be godlike, pick anything. If you want to be GOD, pick a TANK!
DougGraves Posted October 11, 2019 Posted October 11, 2019 I have started an ice/rad and an elec/rad and both do well. Ice drops ice slick and elec drops static field to stop an alpha, and then you have time to set up your rad fields on an anchor. And while ice and elec are not great for damage, rad's resistance debuff makes you add a lot of damage to a team. overall I prefer elec/rad as elec can run a lot of toggles without having END problems. I grab the leadership buffs as well.
Tater Todd Posted October 11, 2019 Posted October 11, 2019 I have both an Ice/Rad and Elec/Rad and I love for different reasons. My Elec/Rad has turned into a more than just your typical Rad. Elec Control in conjunction with Rad is an End Drain force to be reckoned with and now his main theme/focus isn't support it's draining mobs dry and making them hit like kittens. Elec Control, EM Pulse and Mu Mastery and I'm locking down even AVs. It's so fun. I need to make a legit build for him though.
ozob Posted October 12, 2019 Posted October 12, 2019 I might have a different opinion. The reason you see it paired with Illusion so much, it's because it makes for a good solo set. */Rad is not quite as good in teams as it used to be on live. It's still a good set, but most of the things that it brings, people no longer really need; or it's too slow to apply them to improve kill speed. * -To Hit, Toggle: Slow to set up and most people at end game are soft capped to something anyway. Some use in incarnates or teams that struggle * -Res, Toggle: Slow to set up and the kill speeds on average teams makes -Res really useful for things like AVs, EBs, and some other hard targets. * -Regen: Great for AVs, not really needed anywhere else. * Heal: Decent, AOE based which ironically is worse than targeted heals as a lot of teams split up. So having a bigger targeted heal often is better than a smaller radius based heal. * AM is great in lower levels, but if I run Ageless like a lot of people I don't bother to head over for it, 'gather for AM' actually slows team kill speeds ironically as the buff often doesn't make up for the down time required to actually have people gather. So.. it's debuffs are now way to slow to help team kill speed and aren't really needed against anything other than hard targets. While this is true for a lot of debuff sets, the toggle nature of Rad makes it slower to apply then others. It's still very strong, and has a lot of good pairings and synergies, I just think there are a lot of people who have similar conclusions and the high play time is solo where none of these drawbacks apply and it shines. I'd say it's still one of the best solo sets out there. Just for teams it's become middle of the road and while you can do well, there are better options.
Shoulung Posted October 12, 2019 Posted October 12, 2019 I’ll debate the idea that st heals are better than pbaoe heals as with a pbaoe I don’t lose time switching targets. 1
ozob Posted October 12, 2019 Posted October 12, 2019 It is debatable, but with more and more teams splitting and more and more toons having softcap having a bigger ST heal can arguably be a far more efficient choice and a better one to be a healer.
swordchucks Posted October 13, 2019 Posted October 13, 2019 8 hours ago, ozob said: The reason you see it paired with Illusion so much, it's because it makes for a good solo set. Illusion/rad is popular for a few reasons. One of the big ones is that the +30% recharge from AM makes it much easier to reach perma-PA. It's a good power, in general, and even if you're only hitting yourself with it, it's worth using. Another reason is that the only way to really "buff" the damage of PA is to debuff your target. Debuff sets, in general, are in a weird place right now (being mostly useless in grindy content while still being good against AVs/EBs), but I personally like /rad for being well rounded. It has good debuffs when you need them, a good AOE heal when you need it, and a good rez for when someone slips up. It works best when you pair it with a primary that doesn't need a ton of help from the secondary to be good (like Illusion). Of course, the value of the debuffs can go up a lot on a less optimized team. If you're running with PUGs a lot, then you may find that debuffing regular spawns is a valuable use of your time.
Frostweaver Posted October 18, 2019 Posted October 18, 2019 Prior to endgame, I'd take Rad over almost anything else (except Kin midgame) Post endgame though, Traps does everything rad does except heals, and requires vastly less micromanagement. Nature does most of it and has better heals, and Thermal is better for teams to take out an av/gm. But for the long haul, from level 1 to endgame and beyond, rad is still very very decent. It offers more endgame then bubbles, ice, or dark, and on the whole is a good, solid middle-of-the-road choice across a broad cross-section of content.
oedipus_tex Posted October 19, 2019 Posted October 19, 2019 Any of the sets that offer an instant heal that hits the caster are potentially very strong. Even (yes) Empathy. The deal is that it is possible in the current game to build very good defenses and prop up low damage with procs. The sets that offer an instant heal top off already high survivability and result in very solid characters that other classes can't recreate, because while it is possible to add Defense with IOs you won't get a 25% self heal on a 2.5 second recharge. With that in mind /Rad is one of the stronger sets with a PBAoE heal, so it naturally is pretty good.

Erydanus Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 I always thought we heard a lot about Ill/Rad because people enjoy Ill but it is sorely lacking in direct controls. Rad takes care of that with a strong buff/debuff game paired with bonus holds. In truth it works well with just about anything. My main on live was Gravity/Radiation. Thematically it worked well for me and in terms of controls it was simply insane. I'd drop my anchors on some guy and then scoop half the room up with wormhole and shoot everyone into a corner where they'd all be affected by them, then pin them in place with gravity's immobilize. Rad is such a strong set for a soloing controller to. There are so many tricks you can do with it. Anchor pulling with Radiation Infection for instance. Drop it on a guy and run around a corner, he comes after you and the anchor aggros his buddies. Suddenly 3 or 4 skulls spread out in a warehouse come around a corner in a clump, shooting at you and missing because the anchor has debuffed them. See me on Excelsior as Eridanus - Whisperkill - Kid Physics - Ranger Wilde - The Hometown Scrapper - Firewatch - and more!

Jace The Comic Source1 Posted November 27, 2019 Posted November 27, 2019 20 hours ago, Hyperstrike said: And here's a speed demon version that isn't concerned with pulling alphas. Though you don't NEED a tank. They can be your multi Fallout -> Vengeance -> Mutation bait. So my thought has been to make a FRad on each of my 4 accounts, with wife, son and daughter that brings me up to 7. I could conceivably take down anything with this group. Maybe go with a few of each type. One or two of the Tank variety and the rest the Speed Demon version. Going to be a fun experiment anyway.
