Help me love City again

Arbegla

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I recently finished all of the Hero side content, and I'm slowly working my way through the villain side, but I've lost some steam. I'm playing my bot/traps MM and I can't seem to find much joy or challenge in the game anymore. I'm in a bit of a funk but I want to enjoy the game again.

What 'new' thing could I do, what worthwhile AE arcs are there to play, what advice do ya'll have to bring that spark back to my soul?

Any help would be appreciated and welcome.

Let me tell you about this thing I discovered..

It's called Altitis, I know what you might be thinking, but it is not that bad.  It is a little harder to shake than a full blown heroine addiction, but a lot more fun!

I definitely tried it. Even enjoyed it for awhile, but there's only so many times I can Go. Hunt. Kill Skuls. regardless of the character in front of me.

There’s a series of long form arcs in AE, if you’re looking for new content. Just search SFMA.

I have done a TON of AE work, both long form and single arc. Just search the AE mish list for my sig @cranebump. For more information on my stories, head to the AE forum sub-heading and look for “Crane’s World.” Support your AE authors! We ARE the new content.

Hate to say this, but maybe it’s time to take a break from the game

Agreed.

Do something else for awhile.

OR Do something different in the game.

Build base. I am maintaining two ... hours can go by.

Badge ... yea I know - BUT it makes you dive into the lore of the of city we sometimes forget.

Tour the city and just listen - we have amazing music throughout the city

Try a few new builds.

If you "did all content" Hero side, tip of the mask wag of the cape!

I find it easy to do Redside and horrid to do Blue.  It sounds like you do not 'like' villany.  Because if you got through Blue.  Sheesh!  You musta loved that.

You might try running a bunch of TFs as a break.  It is an ENTIRELY different experience than soloing.  You have to adapt to various teams, use powers differently, and play a different way.

I did all the villain content that was on live, back on live, so I wanted to see if I could do all the hero side content on one character. I did a lot of locking my character at certain levels just to make sure I did all the available content. I even went through all the Gold Side stuff via the O-portal, and I've done about half of the red side stuff via O-portal as well.

This. Make a character that looks good. Copy someone on the "post your best costume here thread", change some colours - I try to stick to some simple principles;

  • Three or Four colours. No more, no less.
  • Use pure black sparingly, if at all.
  • If you need help look for a complimentary colour wheel online.
  • Trending colours in this cyberpunk era are turqoise/pink/electric blue and yellow.

..  one of the best techniques is to try to replicate a design for a character from another game.

..It only takes one Beanbag fan saying that they JRANGER it for the devs to revert it.

Stop playin.  Take a few months off or quit permanently.  If you are that bored with the game that you are askin others to convince you to keep playin, then you need to get a way from it before you start to hate it. Base buildin can fill avoid but in the long run you will start to get bored of it eventually and back at the same point that you are now.

Honesty sucks but that's how it is.

Hate to see any member in our community leave but I'm not goin to convince you to stay.

If you ran everything that interests to a point that it don't then its best to take a break and enjoy something else in life.

There's nothing wrong with taking a break.

Honestly, what I'm mostly here for isn't playing yet another ITF or whatnot, but RP. Developing characters in what's essentially a big freeform group writing project (even if most of the writing is in chat) and seeing how their "lives" go is fun, at least for me, and it turns COH into one big sandbox.

Granted, there's also writing and discussion outside of the game, but still - there'll *never* be enough new content for folks. There wasn't on live with a paid, professional staff, there won't be here. Have to figure out how to keep things fresh for yourself.

Primarily on Everlasting. Squid afficionado. Former creator of Copypastas. General smartalec.

I tried to combine Circle and DE, but all I got were garden variety evil mages.

I am on a sabbatical myself.  I still log in every now and again, but I don't force myself to play if I am not feeling it.  Usually I'll get the urge after 3-4 months.  I get a crazy idea for an Alt and down the rabbit hole we go again.  Or if a new patch comes out with some interesting power or arc.

Just take a break...and when you come back everything will be 'new' again!

Another vote here for taking a break.

Rather than play next time you're able, I recommend checking out the Heathly Gamer youtube channel and checking out his back catalogs where he discusses gaming addiction and burnout. It's relevant to this situation (though I'm not saying you're dealing with either).

Understanding how your brain reacts to games and how to manage it helps preserve the feeling of fun you get from them.

Another vote for taking a break.  I've been on an extended sabbatical myself, although it isn't entirely due to game fatigue.  It's ironic.  I found the game during the pandemic when I was out of work (I'm a casino dealer/dual).  I played the hell outta Homecoming for about 2 years.  Then I got game fatigue.  Then I got work at a different casino, although I have an hour commute.  That combined with family has made it difficult to fully come back to the game.  But what makes this game remarkeable....after playing from launch to sunset, and again with Homecoming; I still love the game.   So....take a break, keep in touch, and come back when you're ready!   This is a special community, warts and all.

1: Take a break.
2: Try doing the content in a different fashion.  My current "thing" has centralized on trying to do all the hero arcs for max RM earnings.  I've also tried running content at the highest difficulty I can solo (depending on AT).
3: Pick a powerset/AT combo you haven't done before.
4: Slow down to teaming content or events for a bit.

If you want to be godlike, pick anything.

If you want to be GOD, pick a TANK!

Yes to all this!

I also hit the random costume button a lot when making a new alt.

Our costume creator is awesome.

Being a very old time gamer myself, there always comes a time in every players life where they feel the way you do, and in my experience, the only way to solve the issue is to genuinely take a break from the game. It is hardwired in our nature as Humans-Becoming to get tired, bored, or otherwise feel exhausted even when doing anything over, and over, and over, again. It's natural, and is there so we experience something new. So go out and smell the roses, go camping, fishing, biking, write a novel, join a band, or even... God forbid... play another game (like FF14 for example). Trust me, eventually you will feel the urge to pick up and come back home to play CoH again... that too is natural. Getting too much of any one thing is sort of atthema to our being, so go explore and just enjoy what life has to offer. It happens to us all at one point or another... and that is ok. 🙂

Please come and join us on Friday at 2pm Central Time for our Friday Fashion Costume Contest (see the link below). We all hope to see you, yes YOU, there... And if you also wish to join our happy group, the Celestial Warriors SG, please feel free to join our Discord (see link below), and/or contact GL herself (Global is @Laucianna), or any of us if we are on in fact... 🙂

If the information provided is accurate, you've done more than 90% of the player base of HC have done.  Like it or not, that already makes you an outlier for good or ill.

Thus arguably, your describing symptoms of burnout.

That said, interest is a subjective thing.  Seemingly, you like to spend most of your time soloing/on your own.  Spending more time teaming may be a consideration since its a different play dynamic that much of the game caters to.

Other things you could consider:

1. There's always the min/maxing post 50 to run the 4 star Hard mode TF stuff you could consider. Less than 10% of the player base participate in that.

2. Perfecting builds for specific levels/leveling of content etc.

3. Making your own story missions in AE or farms or other content in AE.

4. Start becoming raid leader and helping guide others through task forces extensively

5. Go be an rper on Everlasting

6.  Play goldside

7. Take the worst AT and its worst power set combinations and level it.

8.  Create a new toon as a hardcore toon(on an honor system basis of course) delete it if you die.

10.  Play the new power sets as I doubt you've done any/all of them as yet to 50.

11. Simply shelve the game and return when you are refreshed and motivated to play(this is the direction I suspect you're heading).  Nothing wrong with that as many folks have done that too.

List can keep going on and on really.  In the end its your decision and really most of us are probably not going to have an answer that either matches you or overcomes any objections you may have to it.  I suspect you already know the direction you're leaning in with things and you may just have been looking for affirmation of that indirectly.

Honestly it's nice to take a break from time to time and get a hobby outside of gaming, or to play another game as well (Steam Summer Sale, so things are cheaper).

Otherwise in CoH, you could get involved with the PvP community, become a master base builder, join the gold standard testers group and help test new things that may or may not make it to production, or build some unique AE story arcs.
